Shackleton legacy for the climate unknowns ahead

Examining ancient climates to prepare for present and future challenges

Overview of IBCC-Shack

01. CONTEXT

There is an imminent risk of desertification in the Iberian region. The Mediterranean has already surpassed the temperature thresholds documented in the Paris Agreement in 2015 and it warms up 20% faster than other parts of the world.

02. CHALLENGES

To tackle this problem, there needs to be a better understanding of the mechanisms by which temperature, water availability, and consequently, vegetation and societies respond to this changing climate.

03. OUR SOLUTION

In the IBCC-Shack project, we want to generate knowledge about ancient climates, which may eventually lead to important discoveries for society and a better understanding of today’s climate.

OUR APPROACH

Our team is composed of professionals from different fields, such as biology, geology, chemistry, and history. From a multidisciplinary viewpoint, our project will lead to ground-breaking research and provide the latest data and models in paleoclimate science, together with advanced statistical tools.
